Sword Class

Sword class focuses on the drawing and sheathing of the blade and executing ‘the perfect cut.’ Most of the forms are practiced individually and always emphasize safety and respect. Students begin training with a foam and wooden “practice” sword (bokken) (bokken) and then graduate to a blunted steel sword when they have demonstrated an understanding of sword safety and the basic movements. After attaining a sufficient level of proficiency with the practice sword, sharp blade practice can begin with cutting techniques on tatami mats and bamboo.

Through repetition of practiced forms, clearing the mind of doubt and hesitation, and cultivating a powerful, selfless spirit, we can use the sword as a focus for improving our lives and the world around us.

You can start now! There is no time like the present! We have an ongoing curriculum, which makes it easy to start at any time. Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled class time.
While our kata are from Japanese karate, we don’t limit ourselves to just one style. We are always evolving, growing, and incorporating new techniques and theory into our curriculum. If it works, we will use it!
We have programs for kids who are 3 years old all the way to senior citizens! So to be honest – almost every age is appropriate, and we have never heard anyone say, “I wish I had waited longer to start!”
Martial arts allows you to go at your own pace. Some kids pick up new techniques more quickly than others – but we value the EFFORT to improve the most. Everyone who makes the effort will improve over time, and making ourselves better is one of the main goals. Everyone is greatly encouraged – regardless of his or her athletic level.
Definitely! We have even had students choose to showcase their martial arts skills at talent shows, and everyone is always impressed to see what they can do. Martial Arts training is “cool,” and has benefits even if one is never in a “fight” to need the techniques learned.
Girls love martial arts just as much and get the same fulfillment out of it as boys do. Also, if we’ve learned anything in our years of teaching, it’s that girls are just as tough as boys. Many are even tougher! Young girls in particular can often mature a little faster and be ready to start earlier than boys, although obviously every individual is different.
